Each year, the Fitchburg Fire Department recruits three individuals to become firefighter interns. The intern program traces its origins to the 1970s and is an outstanding way for Madison Area Technical College Fire Science students to gain practical experience in the fire service while working towards their degree. Former interns have found fire service jobs around Wisconsin, the Midwest, and the United States. Several have risen through the ranks to the rank of chief. In 2009, a half dozen former interns have accepted positions with fire departments in Madison (WI), Milwaukee (WI), Rochester (MN), Augusta (ME) and Charleston (SC).
Interns spend two years living and working in Fitchburg's two fire stations. In 2009, the Department added the possiblity of a third year to the program whereby eligible interns can earn their paramedic license.
